Why listening helps
The civics test is spoken: the USCIS officer reads each question aloud, and you answer out loud. Reading the list silently is useful, but it doesn't train your ear for how the questions sound. Listening practice does both. You get used to hearing the questions in English, and the pause makes you recall the answer before you hear it.
Tips
- Answer out loud during the pause, even quietly. Saying the answer helps you remember it far better than just thinking it.
- Start slow, then switch to normal speed. Officers speak at a normal pace.
- Mix in your missed questions. After a practice test, choose “My missed questions” here to review just those.
- For names that change (President, Vice President, Speaker, Chief Justice), confirm the current answers at uscis.gov/citizenship/testupdates. For your senators and governor, see your state's answers.
